Rural communities from within the Yorkshire and the Humber region are being encouraged to apply for funding and advisory support to help set up community-owned shops. The Plunkett Foundation, a charity which promotes and supports co-operatives and social enterprises in rural communities worldwide, is currently offering a £40,000 grant and loan package under the Village Core Programme. As well as financial support the programme provides advice to communities in the process of setting up or taking over their village shop.
Increasingly, rural communities are turning to community ownership to save or revive vital services including village shops, which are essential to everyone in the community. They also provide an important social hub and informal support networks, especially for the less mobile or elderly residents.
There are currently over 230 community owned shops operating nationwide; some operate from previous village shop premises, others are based in community buildings such as the Village Hall or Church and some are located in temporary Portacabins on the village green! Last year alone, the Plunkett Foundation helped more than 30 community shops to open, most of which received support from the Village Core Programme.
The Village CORE Programme provides a start-up grant of up to £20,000 per community-owned rural shop, subject to contributions of at least the same value being obtained from the community and a loan of at least the same value being granted by Co-operative and Community Finance, a recognised Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI).
For more information contact Donna Smith or Harriet English, telephone: 01993 814 377 or email here. You can view the Plunkett Foundation website here.

Social enterprises in Yorkshire and the Humber are being invited to have their say on future funding in the region.
Viewpoint Community Interest Company has won an evaluation contract with Key Fund Yorkshire, a regional social enterprise investor. Viewpoint will be contacting individuals from a sample of over 500 social enterprises that have received funding from the Key Fund, in order to measure their levels of satisfaction.
A further 100 third sector organisations that have not previously accessed support will also be contacted. Viewpoint will be researching the future needs of these enterprises and collecting feedback from other key stakeholders. This will be used to help the Key Fund determine their future plans and activities and to ensure they are offering the right finance packages to support the Yorkshire and Humber social enterprise sector.
For more information on the survey, see here.
